This is a product that has intrigued me for some time, and I really wanted to try. A good friend of ours at CRC, by the name of Laurie, was sweet enough to send me one as a Christmas gift this year as well as some of her favorite lipstick shades to try out. I was excited to finally test it, since I had been eyeing it for a while.
It seems like an odd concept, a product designed to prime both your eyes and lips. The first thing I noticed was the texture, which was very lightweight and not as creamy as I am used to most primers being. It has a very thin, almost watery consistency, so I was concerned product would not adhere to it well enough. I honestly was not that impressed when I applied it, it did not seem like it would really have an effect. It went on like a balm, dried, and that was that. So what I ended up doing was applying it to my lips, but not putting anything on top until I got to work. I then used an OCC Colour Pencil to line and fill my lips with a dark, rich plum shade and left them matte with just the liner.
I went about my day eating rice cakes, drinking coffee, yacking away... I'm a face toucher, so when I am in thought I often times rest my chin in my hand with my fingers curled onto my lips. I didn't really pay much attention to my lips other than to casually notice occasionally that there were no lip marks on my cup. It wasn't until the day was almost over that I actually glanced in the mirror, and noticed that my lips were still perfectly lined and filled with solid, rich color. I was actually stunned! Don't get me wrong, the OCC pencil did its part as well because those things are AMAZING. But as someone with dry lips that usually lives on chapstick, I noticed that throughout the day my lips did not flake or crack, and remained smooth looking even with the matte color (which can usually make the lips look or feel dry).
So of course the next test was to use it as an eye primer. I was so pleasantly surprised by the effect on my lips, I was eager to try it out on my eyes. In my review for the Lorac Primer, I mentioned that I wore my makeup all day and then even went to the gym for an hour of cardio. This happened to also be the first day I tried the primer on my eyes. Even after a full day of work and sweat galore, my makeup did not crease. It was still intact and blended up until I attacked it with my Makeup Eraser. Eye primers are tricky to me, I haven't found many that impress me. Everyone is obsessed with the Urban Decay Primer Potion, but personally I find that it creases and shadows do not blend on it very well. So to find one that did not crease was a feat in itself! I'm not sure this is going to be my go to eye primer, I will still look around and try new ones. But it is certainly going in my bag of tricks for the lips!
The diagram below will give you an idea of the consistency, and how much I use for a full application.
Here I applied my lip color over it. I started with a lip liner from Ulta, in a bright berry shade. I lined using short strokes, then filled in. The "X" technique on the cupid's bow on your top lip will give nice, evenly shaped peaks. Once everything was filled, I relined with my CRC Lip Liner in Merlot, and blended inwards to give more dimension to my lips, making them look slightly bigger. I then used an Elf creamy lipstick in another red-berry shade, to go over the whole lip. You'll notice the texture of my lips is smooth, and they look nice and moisturized.
So though my initial observations seemed skeptical, the product actually turned out to be pretty damn impressive. This is the first product I have tried from Lise Watier, and I am excited to have a quality lip primer for my clients. I can see this being a very helpful tool in my kit, for those long shoots or bridal parties. It is available for purchase at Naimies, among other places, and does have a nice Pro discount! So go forth into the world with your brightly colored lips, and fear not the bleeding and wearing off you have grown accustomed to. Live a life that does not involve frequent reapplying, and a coffee mug with your permanent lip print!
